C was grousing about our decision that he's not old enough to see Star Wars (J says 6, I think a passing shot of charred corpses might wait a little while longer) and while we were retailing the list of movies that he could see, it struck me just how heteronormative so many children's movies are. Sure, we don't get that big a sample -- and where have I been, Mars? -- but there's so often a boy and a girl, and they end up loving each other forever, and it's really so thoroughly unnecessary to the action. It makes me wonder -- obviously the crazies would freak if there were a same-sex love interest (unless they're bluff hearty comrades like Damon and Pythias), but would they freak if the question just never came up?
